What a weekend! We had planned on camping at Port Burwell on Lake Erie but there was no room at the inn.
So after much searching we found some spots at Point Farms. Neither Jill nor myself had heard of this park but being
the only place with a site we were happy to try it.
It turned out to be a very nice campground on the shore of Lake Huron just north of Goderich. It is definately
one of the smaller provincial parks that we have been to but the sites were large and well shaded.
The first night we enjoyed a quiet campfire and sang a few songs with the kids and went to bed a little earlier than
normal so that we could get a good start to the day.
The Friday we all got up and went on a nice hike through the park and the kids were very excited when they found some
deer fur.
We discovered that the park has 2 beaches one was for swimming and we headed there in the afternoon. While playing
with the kids I somehow managed to kick one of the large rocks and break a toe. It didn't slow us down though.
In the first annual boys versus girls sand castle building contest the boys were victorious.
The other beach that was available for use was the dog beach but it was full of stones perfect for throwing and it became
the after dinner entertainment each night. We would head down to the beach and then throw some stones and the kids tried
to get me to make arrowheads out of the limestone that broke so easily. I never made a really good one but we all got
a kick out of me trying.
Saturday was a lot of fun. After freezing all night in the camper because we had a none electrial site and there
was no space heater we had a healthy breakfast and headed into town. There was a children's festival that all the kids
really enjoyed with crafts and games. After all the excitment of the festival we headed to main beach in town which
was much sandier but the water was just as cold. The kids played there all afternoon while Jill and I did some people
watching. We found out that the towns fireworks were scheduled for later that night. We decided to head back to
the camper for dinner and returned to see a really good display. It lasted about 20 mins over the lake.
Sunday morning was cool so the beach was out. Jill decided that some of the really pretty although heavy rocks
on the dog beach would look great in our graden so "we" carried some of them up the 132 stairs to the campsite and brought
them home with us. (They do look nice) We were looking for something to do in town when we realized that the Canada
Day parade was about to start. We sat down and watched the parade for an hour and headed to the country to find a hiking
trail.
We found a trail that crossed what was once the longest train bridge in Ontario. The trail belonged to the
Sifto salt company (see below picture) but they have a large parcel of land that the allow people to use for hiking.
They have a tree that they figure is 350 to 400 years old that the trail leads to. The children saw a great big
rabbit on the trail as well.
We finished the trip with a visit to the ice cream shop before heading home.
It was not where we wear expecting to go but we were sure happy we went.
All in all we had a really good trip.
