After what seemed like an eternity we finally got the all clear to come and pick up our beautiful new trailer. So on
Saturday May 4 we loaded some stuff into the van and went to pick up the trailer.
My first impression of it was "Oh
my God look at the size of that!". It was a lot bigger than I remembered especially when closed. But after calming down an
bit I convinced myself that I would be ablt to tow it no problem. Of course picking it up would not go without a hitch. The
free screen room that was donated to us by the manufacturer was not installed and the camper on the whole wasn't all that
clean. Everything worked and nothing was damaged so I signed the papers and was off on our first pop up camping trip ever.
We stopped at home where I found out that backing a 15 foot trailer into the little parking spot in my parking lot
was not going to be the hardest thing I had ever done which was nice since I had been dreading it for some time now.
We
popped it up and filled it up with all the purchases we had made at the dollar store and Ikea. We through some clothes in
the van and a cooler full of food. Off we went to Fifty Point Conservation Area. We had been there many times since it was
on a few minutes up the road and it is where the parents keep their boat.
Pull into the park got our site and start
setting up. This is when I realized that all the leveling wood was in the trunk and the hatch won't open when hitched to the
camper. Time to unhitch get the wood and rehitch (I'll only make that mistake once). Leveled the trailer easily and started
setting it up. Up goes the roof. In go the safety bars. out go the beds. Startr unpackaging all the nes gizmos and doo hickies
for the kitchen then I realize THE AWNING. Pull the picnic table up beside the camper and open the awning the hard way (another
thing that I'll only do once).
Now that our home away from home was ready we settled in for a little relaxation. Enter all the family members that live
in driving distance who have come to see the new toy. We had a great time showing off the camper to anyone who was willing
to listen.
The next day we kept ourselves busy at the playgrounds and watching the birds. I couldn't believe how
comfortable we all were in the camper. It was just big enough that we weren't constantly running into on another. But small
enough that there was no where to hide from our watchfull eyes.
The Second night is when I learned the third lesson
of the trip. If it looks like it might be windy during the night but awning away before going to bed because 1 in the morning
is not the time to try to fight with the darn thing to get into the little bag on the roof.
We managed to survive
the night and had a nice breakfast before heading home. All in all it was one of the most enjoyable weekends I've had in a
long time.
